The Essential Groom's Guide: Your Wedding Preparation Checklist

Planning a wedding comes with a whirlwind of decisions—venue, music, photographer, indoor or outdoor, and so much more. At SuitsMe Sydney, we’re here to lighten the load by helping you and your groomsmen look your absolute best. To make it easier, we’ve put together a simple checklist to guide you through planning your wedding day attire.

1. Initial Planning

  • Set a Budget: Determine how much you can spend on each suit.
  • Research Wedding Theme and Style: Discuss with your partner the style and feel of your wedding, and research how you envision yourself on the big day.
  • Set Timeline: Plan to start the process at least 4-6 months before the wedding to allow for consultations, fittings, and adjustments.

2. Consultation and Measurements

  • Book Initial Consultation: Schedule an appointment with Lance at SuitsMe.
  • Discuss Style and Preferences: Decide on suit styles, colours, fabrics, and any specific details.
  • Get Measured: Ensure all groomsmen are measured by the tailor for accuracy.

3. Suit Design

  • Choose Fabric: Select from different fabric options considering the season and venue.
  • Select Suit Style: Single-breasted, double-breasted, three-piece suit, etc.
  • Pick Details: Decide on lapel style, pocket type, vents, buttons, lining, etc.
  • Customization Options: Consider personal touches like monogramming.

4. Fittings

  • First Fitting: Review the initial suit mock-up or measurements and make adjustments.
  • Second Fitting: Try on the suit and note any areas that need refinement.
  • Final Fitting: Ensure the suit fits perfectly and make any last-minute tweaks.

5. Accessories

  • Shirts: Choose custom or off-the-rack shirts that complement the suits.
  • Ties/Bow Ties: Coordinate colours and styles with the overall wedding theme.
  • Pocket Squares: Select colours and patterns that match or complement the suits. Consider using excess fabric from the bride’s and bridesmaids’ dress alterations to create matching or themed pocket squares.
  • Cufflinks: Consider personalised cufflinks for a special touch.
  • Shoes: Ensure everyone has polished, matching shoes.
  • Belts/Suspenders: Decide on whether belts or suspenders are preferred.

6. Final Preparations

  • Collect Suits: Pick up the finished suits from the tailor.
  • Final Try-On: Ensure everyone tries on their suit one last time before the wedding day.
  • Socks and Underwear: Ensure all socks and underwear are set aside with the outfits. Pack spares in the emergency kit.
  • Emergency Kit: Prepare a small kit with sewing supplies, stain remover, spare socks and underwear, and other essentials for any last-minute issues.

7. Day-of Checklist

  • Check Fit: Make sure everyone’s suit fits properly on the wedding day.
  • Coordinate Dressing Time: Allow enough time for everyone to get dressed and ready.
  • Final Touches: Adjust ties, pocket squares, and other accessories before the ceremony.
  • Enjoy the Day: Have fun and soak in every moment. No matter how well you plan, something might go off script, so just roll with it and enjoy the ride!
